Customer-facing displays provide a secondary screen for your Retail POS system, showing real-time transaction details to your customers. Customers can interact with the display to complete their payments and opt in to marketing emails.
Using a customer-facing display with Retail POS is optional, but in some jurisdictions, retailers are legally required to have a customer-facing display so customers can view sale information. Regulations vary depending on your region. For a full list of regulations, contact your local regulators.
You can use Lightspeed Payments and the Smart Terminal (WisePOS E) or Smart Terminal v2 (S700), your own iPad/ tablet using a web browser, or a secondary iPad using the Lightspeed Display app as your customer-facing display.
Using a secondary iPad with the Display app
Requirements:
- Two iPads running iOS 16.4+
- Apps must be updated to the latest version.
Configuration:
- A register iPad running the Retail (X) app version 6.4.2+
- A secondary iPad running the Display app version 5.0.0+
The Display app can only link to one register iPad at a time (one customer-facing display per in-store register).
If you're using a secondary iPad as your display, you can download the Display app on the device and enable the customer-facing display:
- Download the Display app on the secondary iPad.
- On your register iPad, open the Retail (X) app and log in to your account.
- Navigate to Settings > Hardware.
-
Under Lightspeed Display, toggle on Enable customer-facing display.
- A pop-up will display your pairing code. On your secondary iPad, enter the pairing access code > Pair.
- In the Allow Display (X) to find devices on local networks? pop-up, click Allow.
The customer-facing display screen will load on your secondary iPad.
Keeping your secondary iPad awake
To keep your customer-facing display active, keep the device charged and connected to Wi-Fi. Turn off screensavers, sleep mode, and auto-lock in the iPad's Settings.
To keep your iPad awake:
- On your secondary iPad, navigate to Settings > Apps > Display (X).
-
Toggle on Prevent app from going to sleep.
Troubleshooting your secondary iPad display
Display app isn't automatically pairing
Generally, when you reopen your Retail (X) app, it will pair automatically with your customer-facing display. If it doesn't automatically pair:
- On the secondary iPad, close the Display app.
- On the register iPad, navigate to Settings > Apps > Display (X).
- Toggle on Reset pairing with register.
- Re-pair your secondary iPad.
Unable to pair with Lightspeed Retail X error
If you get an Unable to pair with Lightspeed Retail (X) error:
- Verify that the access code you entered on the Display app is the same code displayed on the Retail (X) app.
- Check that you've updated your Retail (X) app to the most recent version by navigating to the App Store > Your account > App Updates and clicking Update next to the Retail (X) app. You will not be able to pair your Retail (X) app with your Display app if your Retail (X) app is not updated.
-
On the register iPad, navigate to Settings > Apps > Retail (X) > Location. Make sure your iPad's location access is set to either Ask Next Time Or When I Share, or While Using the App.

- Total
- Balance remaining to pay
Line-item or sale notes are not displayed. If the customer makes partial payments, the balance amount displayed in the Checkout section will decrease.

If you add an existing customer to the sale, you'll be prompted to add the sale to the customer's history by clicking Add sale.
The customer's information will show on the customer-facing display.
