Security tip of the month

Tip

Think twice before accepting cookies

We run into cookie banners on almost every website, and it’s easy to just click Accept All to clear the pop-up. But not all HTTP cookies serve the same purpose.

First-party vs third-party cookies

  • First-party cookies: Created directly by the website you are visiting. They handle helpful features, like keeping you logged in, remembering what’s in your shopping cart, or saving your preferences.
  • Third-party cookies: Created by external domains (like ad networks). They can help websites understand usage, measure campaigns, personalize content, or serve ads, and may also be used to track your activity across different websites.

Smart cookie habits

  • Choose cookie preferences intentionally for one-off sites: If you’re visiting a website you've never used before and don't plan to revisit, consider whether you want to Deny All to stop external tracking scripts from following you across the web.
  • Don’t be pressured by the big "Accept" button: Take a moment to look for choices like Reject, Decline, or Manage Preferences so you can choose the setting that works for you.
  • Review site data when troubleshooting: If a website is behaving unexpectedly, reviewing or clearing cookies for that specific site can sometimes help resolve sign-in or preference issues without affecting other websites.

Clearing site data will log you out and reset saved preferences for that site.

In Chrome on a computer, navigate to Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions to review the site’s stored data and make changes if needed. Learn more about managing your Chrome browsing data on iPhone/iPad or Android.

In Safari (Mac), navigate to Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data to review the data stored by websites and remove sites if needed. Learn more about managing your Safari browsing data on iPhone.
