Retail POS (X-Series) offers built-in AI-powered tools to help you create and format product descriptions for your items, no prior experience with AI needed. Generate descriptions in a click, or add any specific instructions like desired text length, tone, or style to customize the result to your liking. If you use multiple languages in your online storefront, you can also translate product names and descriptions with AI.

To create, format, and translate product descriptions with AI, you need to have Lightspeed eCom (E-Series) connected to Retail POS.

Creating product descriptions with AI

An AI-powered tool built into your Retail POS generates engaging, customized product descriptions for you. In a click, the AI analyzes key product details — including first product photo, name, category, brand and UPC, weight and dimensions, your store name — to craft compelling copy that attracts customers.

You can further refine the description by specifying features and benefits you want to highlight in the product description or provide AI with specific instructions on tone, style, etc. For example, you can request a professional, playful, or persuasive tone.

If your product already has a description, it will not be used when generating a new one.

To generate a product description with AI:

1. In Retail POS, navigate to Catalog > Products and open the product for editing.

2. Click the Generate with AI icon above the product description field and choose Generate description with AI:

   

3. (optional) Enter product features and benefits that you want to highlight.
4. (optional) Click Special instructions to add any specific requirements, such as defining your target audience or excluding the product category from the description.
5. Click Generate.
6. (optional) To refine the result, make changes to features, benefits, or instructions, then click Regenerate.
7. Click Apply when you are satisfied with the description. Click Discard description if you don’t want to use the changes.
8. Click Save.

Your product now has a new description generated by AI. It will appear in the Description field in Retail POS and will sync to your eCom (E-Series) Admin Panel to be used on your online storefront.

Formatting product descriptions with AI

You can use the built-in AI tool in your Retail POS to format product descriptions for better readability. The AI automatically makes meaningful parts of the text bold and adds paragraphs and bullet points. You can also add instructions to request custom formatting.

The content of the text will remain the same after using the AI tool. It will only have new formatting applied, unless you add instructions to request text changes.

To format a product description with AI:

1. In Retail POS, navigate to Catalog > Products and open the product for editing.
2. Make sure the Description field contains the text you want to format.

3. Click the Improve with AI icon above the product description field and choose Format description with AI:

   

4. (optional) Enter special instructions, such as requesting short paragraphs.
5. Click Format description.
6. (optional) To refine the result, add special requirements, then click Reformat description.
7. Click Apply when you are satisfied with the description. Click Discard description if you don’t want to use the changes.
8. Click Save.

Your product description now has new AI formatting both in Retail POS and in eCom. 

Translating product names and descriptions with AI

You can use the built-in AI tool in your eCom admin to auto-translate product names and descriptions into all your additional storefront languages.

To translate a product name and description with AI:

1. Navigate to your eCom Admin Panel.
2. From the side menu, click Catalog > Products and select the product you want to edit.
3. Make sure the Name and Description fields contain the text you want to translate.
4. Scroll down to the Translations section.

5. Click the AI icon above the product description field in the additional language and choose Add Translations with AI:

   

6. Select what you want to translate (name, description, or both) and the languages you want to translate into.
7. Click Translate.
8. (optional) To refine the result, click Retranslate.
9. Click Apply when you are satisfied with the translation.
   Click Discard if you don’t want to use the changes.
10. Click Save.

Your product now has a new AI translation of its name and/or description in your eCom storefront.

Creating SEO descriptions for products with AI

SEO descriptions (or meta tags) provide information about your products for search engines. These texts should be pitchy and concise so they're not cut off and grab attention in the search results. Learn more about adding custom meta tags to product pages →

By default, product name and description are used as meta tags. The AI-powered tool built into your eCom admin allows you to generate SEO content for your products.

To create SEO descriptions for products with AI:

1. Navigate to your eCom Admin Panel.
2. From the side menu, click Catalog > Products and select the product you want to edit.
3. Switch to the SEO tab.

4. Click the AI icon above the Page title and meta description field and choose Generate Content with AI:

   

5. (optional) Enter product features and benefits that you want to highlight.
6. (optional) Click Special instructions to add any specific requirements, such as using a specific tone of voice.
7. Click Generate.
8. (optional) To refine the result, click Regenerate.
9. Click Apply when you are satisfied with the description.
   Click Discard description if you don’t want to use the changes.
10. Click Save.

That’s it! Your product has SEO title and description generated by AI in your eCom storefront.
