Coming soon to the Gift cards page in Retail POS (X-Series): New omnichannel features to help you sell gift cards in more places to unlock additional cash flow, manage gift card settings more effectively, and offer customers more flexible redemption options.
What is changing with gift cards?
The new gift card experience unlocks new functionality and more flexibility, including setting minimum and maximum amounts, adding quick-select gift card amounts to the Sell screen, and updating gift card settings. Omnichannel merchants (Retail POS and eCom (E-Series)) can choose to sell gift cards both online and in-store, online only, or in-store only. Customers will be able to redeem gift cards both in-store and online.
When will I see the new gift card experience in my account?
New merchants who sign up to Lightspeed as of February 4, 2025 will be the first to have access to the new gift card experience as it begins rolling out.
In February into March 2025, the new gift card experience will gradually roll out to existing Retail POS (X-Series) merchants who do not have eCom (E-Series).
In March 2025, the new gift card experience will be available to all merchants, including omnichannel merchants currently using Retail POS with eCom (E-Series).
How do I access the new gift card experience?
When the feature has been activated in your Retail POS account, your Catalog > Gift cards page will be automatically updated to the new omnichannel gift card experience. If you have already enabled gift cards, there is no action required.
Until the feature has been activated in your Retail POS account, you will continue to have access to the standard gift card experience.
The new gift card experience will be rolling out gradually. During this period, use the Gift cards 1.0 tab in gift card articles to access standard experience instructions or the Gift cards 2.0 tab for new experience information.
How does the new gift card experience work?
When the new gift card experience is available in your Retail POS account, you will see new and improved options on your Catalog > Gift cards page:
Sell gift cards in-store and online
With the new experience, you can choose to sell your gift cards In-store and online, In-store only, or Online only (for merchants with eCom (E-Series) stores):
- In-store and online: Gift cards can be sold in-store or online.
- In-store only: Gift cards can only be sold in-store on physical gift cards.
- Online only: Gift cards can only be sold online.
Customers will always have the option to redeem gift cards in-store or online.
Merchants who do not have eCom (E-Series) will not see the Sales channels section in the new gift card experience. If you activate eCom in the future, Sales channels will appear on the Gift cards page, allowing you to choose which channels to sell your gift cards on.
Set minimum and maximum amounts
Under Limits, you can set minimum (optional) and maximum (required) amounts that can be added to a gift card during a sale.
Add custom gift card amounts to the Sell screen
After setting up your predefined amounts on the Gift cards page, the Sell screen will feature quick-select options so you can easily add a set amount when selling or topping up a gift card.
Predefined amounts must be within your minimum to maximum limits. If no predefined amounts are set, you’ll have to enter a custom amount to add funds to the gift card.
Set gift card expiration
You can optionally choose to allow your gift cards to expire after a set period. Make sure to review and follow local laws and regulations before applying gift card expiry.
Stop selling gift cards
If you wish to stop selling gift cards across all sales channels, click Stop selling gift cards at the bottom of the Gift cards page. Customers will still be able to redeem previously purchased gift cards.
To change where you’re selling gift cards, you can update your Sales channels at the top of the page to In-store only or Online only.
What will happen to my existing gift card data?
For existing merchants who signed up to Lightspeed prior to February 2025, your existing gift card data will be automatically migrated to the new gift card experience once the feature has been activated in your Retail POS account. You can continue using the standard gift card experience until the new feature is activated in your account.
The new omnichannel gift card experience will be rolling out gradually. When the feature has been activated in your Retail POS account, your Catalog > Gift cards page will be automatically updated.
