Hi. How can we help?

Connecting Meta to track in-store conversions in Retail POS (X-Series)

You can connect Retail POS to Meta to automatically send information about in-store purchase to Meta.

Sending purchase events can help Meta understand when your ads on Facebook or Instagram contribute to in-store sales. You can review these events in your Meta Events Manager and use the data to measure and optimize your ad campaigns.

Connecting Meta does not guarantee that every purchase will be matched to a customer or attributed to an ad. Matching and attribution are determined by Meta based on the information available for each event.

Understanding Meta conversion tracking in Retail POS

After you connect Meta, Retail POS sends information about in-store purchases to Meta as Purchase events through the Meta Conversions API, also known as CAPI.

It works similarly to the Meta Pixel, but while the Pixel is installed on your online store and collects data from customers’ browsers, the Conversions API tracks your in-store sales, sending data directly from your POS to Meta.

In particular, Meta gets info about:

  • Customer information specified in the customer profile in your POS, such as their name, email, phone number, and so on. Meta receives customer information only for customers who have consented to sharing their details. Without consent, the Purchase event will not be sent to Meta.
  • Purchase total and currency.
  • Purchase date and time.
  • Number of purchased items.

Meta uses this data to learn about your customers and create an ideal customer profile that is more likely to buy from you. It then uses that data to optimize your ad campaign and show boosted and advertised posts to the most relevant audience that is more likely to buy from you.

Connecting your Retail POS to Meta

Once you have all Meta assets, you can connect your Meta account to Retail POS.

To connect your Retail POS with Meta:

  1. From Retail POS, go to Settings → Apps
  2. Switch to the Directory tab, scroll down to Meta, and click Learn more
  3. Сlick Connect to Meta
  4. In the new tab, sign in with your personal Facebook account.
  5. Follow the onboarding wizard by selecting Meta assets. Adding Instagram is optional—you add it if you want to track conversion with Instagram ads.
  6. Get consent from customers to share their data with Meta. Without the consent, the Purchase event will not appear on Meta.

Once you complete the wizard, you need to verify Purchase events in the Meta Events Manager to make sure Meta receives your purchase data correctly and can use it to optimize your ads.

After the connection is complete, Retail POS begins sending information about in-store sales to Meta as Purchase events. It may take some time to display events in Meta after the purchase is completed.

You create ads and measure its results from Meta and not from your Retail POS. Learn more about ad campaigns in Meta:

Meta determines whether an event can be matched to a Meta account or attributed to an advertisement. Some events may remain unmatched or may not appear in campaign reporting.

Recording customer consent for tracking in-store conversion in Meta

For Meta to optimize your ad campaigns, customer information needs to be included with the purchase information sent to Meta so that Meta can learn about your audience.

You must first obtain the customer’s consent to share their data with Meta and then record that consent in their Retail POS customer profile. By default, the customer consent option is unchecked in customer profiles.

Without consent, the Purchase event will not be sent.

You are responsible for determining how consent should be requested, documented, and maintained for your business (verbally, by email, etc.). This information is not legal advice. Consult your legal or privacy advisers if you need guidance about your obligations.

To get and record a customer’s consent:

  1. Ask the customer for permission to share their data with Meta. You can ask during an in-store purchase or contact existing customers separately, such as by email.
  2. From Retail POS, go to Customers
  3. Select the customer’s profile and click Edit customer
  4. Tick the Customer accepted Lightspeed’s Privacy Policy box.
  5. Click Save changes

Verifying Purchase events for tracking in-store conversion in Meta

After connecting Retail POS to Meta, you need to verify that Meta is receiving Purchase events correctly in Meta Events Manager to make sure Meta receives your purchase data correctly and can use it to optimize your ads.

Before you can verify Purchasing events, you need to complete at least one new purchase for a customer who has agreed to share their information to Meta

To verify Purchase events in Meta:

  1. Get at least one sale for a customer who has agreed to share their information with Meta.
  2. In your Meta Business account, go to Meta Events Manager
  3. Verify Purchase events in Meta Events Manager

Once you verify Purchase events, Meta will get accurate info about in-store purchases.

Viewing in-store conversion results in Meta

After you connect your POS with Meta, obtain customer consent, and verify Purchase events, Meta will receive information about your in-store purchases along with the customer information from your customer profiles.

Meta then matches in-store purchase information with people’s interactions with your Facebook and Instagram ads. It also uses information about your customers to optimize ad distribution and show it to the most relevant audience.

In your Meta Ads Manager, you can measure which campaigns drive offline sales and see how your online ads contributed to your offline purchases.

Disconnecting Meta from Retail POS

When you no longer need Meta to track in-store purchases, you can disconnect it from your Retail POS.

After disconnecting, you will no longer be able to tag products on Instagram and run ads across Facebook and Instagram. Disconnecting may also result in the loss of purchase-tracking data collected through the Meta Pixel.

Disconnecting Meta is also the first step when you want to reset your existing connection or connect another Meta account. In that case, you will need to connect Retail POS to Meta again from the beginning after disconnecting.

To disconnect Meta from Retail POS:

  1. From the Home page of your Retail POS, click Learn more on the Facebook banner:

    disconnect meta.png
  2. On the Facebook page, click Disconnect the page.

You can then reconnect your store to Meta if needed.

Meta in-store conversion FAQ

Why can’t I select a Meta business account, ad account, or Pixel?

Make sure that:

  • You are signed in to the correct Meta account. It should be your personal Facebook account, connected to your Meta Business assets
  • You have permission to manage the required Meta assets.
  • Your Meta Business account, ad account, and Pixel are active.

Meta asset permissions are managed in Meta Business Manager.

Why don’t Purchase events appear in Meta Events Manager?

Purchase events may take some time to appear while Meta processes the purchase data.

Make sure that:

  • Meta is still connected in Retail POS.
  • You are checking the same Pixel selected during connection.
  • The sale was completed after Meta was connected.
  • The customer have their consent to send their data to Meta.
  • You are looking for the Purchase event in Meta Events Manager

Why are Purchase events received but not attributed to Meta ads?

Meta controls event matching and advertisement attribution. A Purchase event may not be attributed when:

  • Meta cannot match the event to a Meta account.
  • The purchase falls outside Meta’s attribution settings or attribution window.
  • The available event information is insufficient.
  • The customer did not interact with an eligible advertisement.

Why have Purchase events stopped appearing?

Check the following:

  • The Meta is still connected to POS.
  • The connected Meta assets are active.
  • Your permissions for the Meta business account, ad account, and Pixel have not changed.
  • You are viewing the correct Pixel in the Meta Events Manager.

If the connection is no longer valid, disconnect and reconnect Meta.

Does the integration sync my Retail POS products to Meta?

No. Connecting Meta for in-store conversion tracking does not sync your Retail POS product catalog to Meta.

Will every purchase be matched to a Meta user?

No. Meta determines whether an event can be matched. Matching depends on the information included with the event and Meta’s own systems.

Will every purchase be attributed to a Meta advertisement?

No. Sending a Purchase event does not guarantee advertisement attribution. Meta applies its own matching, attribution, and reporting rules.
