Under California Senate Bill 1215, an additional Covered Battery Embedded (CBE) Waste Recycling Fee must be charged for certain types of new and refurbished electronic products that contain embedded batteries. This applies to all eligible products sold or leased to Californian customers.

You can turn on collecting the CBE Recycling Fee at checkout in your Lightspeed eCom (E-Series) online store. This includes two steps:

1. Activating the CBE Recycling Fee collection option in your online store.
2. Turning on fee collection for products that are eligible for the CBE Recycling Fee.

The CBE Recycling Fee will be charged at a rate of 1,5% per product, capped at $15 per item, and is not subject to the sales tax.

Before you start collecting the fee, you may need to register for a CBE waste recycling fee account through the CDTFA online portal and then remit the fee to the CDTFA. Consult with a legal professional and product's manufacturer if you have any questions about charging the CBE Recycling Fee or determining which products are eligible for collecting the fee.

Step 1. Activating CBE Recycling Fee collection in your store

First, you need to enable collecting the CBE Recycling Fee in your eCom store.

To enable CBE Recycling Fee collection in your eCom store:

1. Navigate to Online > Overview > Go to eCom to open the eCom admin.
2. From your eCom admin, go to Settings > Taxes.
3. Scroll down to California’s Covered Battery Embedded (CBE) Waste Recycling Fee.

4. Turn on the toggle.

   

5. The changes will be autosaved. 

That’s it. Now, you can turn on the CBE Recycling Fee collection for products that you determine are eligible. Unless you do that, the fee will not be collected at checkout.

Step 2. Turning on CBE Recycling Fee collection for eligible products

After you activate CBE Recycling Fee collection at checkout in your eCom store, you can turn this option on for eligible products.

To turn on collecting the CBE Recycling Fee for a product:

1. Navigate to Online > Overview > Go to eCom to open the eCom admin.
2. From your eCom admin, go to Catalog > Products.
3. Open the product you want to edit.
4. Switch to the Taxes & Fees tab.

5. Turn on the Charge California’s Covered Battery Embedded (CBE) Waste Recycling Fee at checkout toggle.

   

6. Save the changes.

That’s it. Now, the CBE Recycling Fee will be applied to this product at checkout in your online store for eligible customers. The fee will be charged at a rate of 1,5% of a product price, with a maximum of $15 per item. Information on the applied CBE Recycling Fee will appear as a separate line item in eCom's customer order notifications and in invoices.
