Security tip of the month

Tip

Don’t let scammers cash in on big events

Major events like international football tournaments create excitement that scammers often try to exploit. During popular tournaments, concerts, holidays, and other high-profile events, fraudsters often create fake websites, bogus ticket offers, suspicious streaming links, and “limited-time” promotions to trick people into sharing payment details, personal information, or downloading malware.

While consumers may be targeted by fake tickets or streaming sites, merchants face different risks. Scams can show up as unusual customer requests, chargeback fraud using stolen credit cards, or phishing emails disguised as trusted vendors, delivery companies, or payment providers.

It’s important to:

  • Pause before acting on "urgent" requests: Scammers rely on false urgency to pressure you into making mistakes. Watch for phrases like “final notice” or “immediate payment required”, rushed refund requests, or last-minute shipping changes. Pause before clicking, refunding, paying, or changing an order.
  • Scrutinize senders, links, and websites: Before entering login details, payment information, or business data, verify the source. Check the actual email address (not just the display name) and watch for small misspellings, extra characters, or links that lead to lookalike websites.
  • Monitor for unusual order patterns: Be alert for mismatched billing and shipping addresses, multiple failed payment attempts followed by a success, requests to move communication or payments off-platform, and unexpected attachments from unfamiliar customers.
  • Spot fake partnership or sponsorship offers: Scammers may pose as event organizers or influencers offering advertising, in-store promotions, restaurant tie-ins, vendor opportunities, or sponsorships around major events and festivals. Verify event organizers and ensure applications are legitimate before transferring funds.

If something feels too good to be true, overly urgent, or slightly off, double-check it through a trusted channel. A quick pause could save your business from costly fraud.
