Hi. How can we help?

Setting up product-specific shipping rates in Lightspeed eCom

By default, your Lightspeed eCom (E-Series) online store uses global shipping settings that apply to all products. For items that are fragile, oversized, or have unique shipping requirements, you can set up product-specific shipping rates. This way, you can charge your customers a specific amount instead of your regular shipping fees.

For every product in your online store, you can add a fixed fee that will be applied to shipping rates, add fixed rates, or offer free shipping.

You can manage product-specific shipping rates for several items in bulk via Mass Update.

Adding a fixed fee to shipping methods

Shipping methods that you set up in the Online tab > Settings > Shipping and pickup in Retail POS are automatically assigned to all products in your online store. If any of the products require extra shipping costs, you can cover those costs by adding a fixed fee for that particular item. A fixed fee will be applied for each item in the cart on top of the shipping cost.

Let’s say you sell fragile plates and want to use a special package to ship items safely. In that case, you can add $2.99 as a fixed fee per item. This $2.99 will be added for each item of the product in the cart on top of all shipping rates in your store. If a customer adds two plates to the cart, eCom automatically adds $5.98 to the shipping costs; for three plates, it will be $8.97, etc. A fixed fee will be summed with the shipping cost, so your customers won’t see any ‘extra fees’ at checkout.

To add a fixed fee to your basic shipping costs:

  1. In your eCom admin panel, go to Catalog > Products.
  2. Click on a product that requires a fixed fee.
  3. When on the product editing page, switch to the Shipping & Pickup tab.
  4. Under Shipping Rates, select Use your store’s shipping methods.
  5. Click Add fixed fee per item:

Creating a fixed rate for a product

A fixed rate per item, or a fixed shipping rate, is a flat amount that you charge your customers for shipping. Unlike a fixed fee per item, a fixed shipping rate is not added on top of your global shipping rates. It’s a fixed amount that will be displayed to your customers as a shipping cost at checkout instead of your store’s shipping rates (if any).

This option helps you to set up an individual shipping price for a product. For example, you can set a fixed rate of $30 for large items in your store to cover extra shipping costs.

To add a fixed rate per item:

  1. In your eCom admin panel, go to Catalog > Products.
  2. Click on a product that requires a fixed rate.
  3. When on the product editing page, switch to the Shipping & Pickup tab.
  4. Under Shipping Rates, select Fixed rate per item and type the fee you want to charge your customers with.

Offering free shipping per product

You can set free shipping for any particular item in your online store. In that case, a product will be shipped free of charge, regardless of its quantity in the cart. For instance, you can offer free shipping for expensive products in your store to encourage customers to buy high-priced items.

If you want to offer free shipping on all items in your catalog, you can create a global Free Shipping method in the Online tab > Settings > Shipping and Pickup in Retail POS, rather than using a product-specific free shipping method.

To offer free shipping per item:

  1. In your eCom admin panel, go to Catalog > Products.
  2. Click on a product that requires free shipping.
  3. When on the product editing page, switch to the Shipping & pickup tab.
  4. Under Shipping Rates, select Free shipping.

  5. Click Save.

You can highlight free-shipping products with product ribbons — colored horizontal labels that are displayed on product listings thumbnails and product details pages in your online store. Or you can add product subtitles, short texts displayed on the product list and the product details page.
