Managing gift cards in eCom (E-Series)

After enabling gift cards for online sale, gift cards can be purchased in your online store and redeemed at checkout.

You can edit gift card settings to define how the gift card product looks in your online storefront in your eCom (E-Series) Admin panel under Catalog > Products.

Purchasing gift cards as an online customer

Gift cards are purchased like any other product in your online store. Customers must specify the recipient email and gift card amount. They can also enter additional data like recipient name, sender name, and add a personal message.

After purchase, the customer will get a gift card order confirmation email and the recipient will be sent the gift card via email. Orders containing a gift card must have the Paid order status under My Sales > Orders in your eCom Admin before the gift card can be sent.

Gift cards:

  • Are not subject to taxes at the time of purchase. Taxes are charged when customers add items to the cart and redeem the gift card.
  • Can be purchased using Loyalty dollars, but a gift card purchase itself will not generate Loyalty.
  • Can’t be used to purchase another gift card. Also, eCom discount coupons can't be used for a gift card purchase. If a customer applies a coupon code to an order, the discount applies to all the products in the order except the gift card.

Redeeming gift cards as an online customer

After purchase, the gift card recipient gets an email with the subject "Your Gift Card from (store name)" including a unique gift card code, barcode, and balance. It’s automatically sent to the recipient's email address as soon as the online order status changes to Paid.

The recipient can click the Start shopping link in the email to go to your online store.

To redeem the card online, the recipient clicks Redeem your code under Have a promo coupon or gift card? in the cart at checkout, then enters the gift card code from the email in the redemption field.

The Have a promo code or gift card? Redeem your code message appears as soon as at least one gift card is purchased in your online store.

The recipient can use the gift card to pay for products in your online store until they spend the entire balance or the card expires, if you set gift card expiry in Retail POS. A gift card can be used in multiple orders until it’s fully redeemed. A customer can see the remaining balance after they apply a gift card at checkout.

If the order total is more than the gift card amount, the customer must pay the remaining amount using another payment method. Customers can only apply one gift card per order.

Loyalty is generated if an order is paid with a gift card, as it's calculated based on order’s subtotal before a gift card is applied.

Customizing gift card display in the online store

In your eCom Admin, you can customize how the gift card title, description, input text, and more will appear in your online store. These settings are available after you enable and set up gift cards for selling online in Retail POS.

To customize how gift cards are displayed in your online store:

  1. In Retail POS, navigate to Catalog > Gift cards.
  2. Scroll down and click Go to Lightspeed eCom to open your eCom Admin.

    The Go to Lightspeed eCom link appears after you enable gift cards for selling online in Retail POS.

  3. In your eCom Admin, navigate to Catalog > Gift Cards > Customize Gift Card.
  4. Update the settings as needed:
    • On the General tab, you can change the gift card name and description, set an image, change the online store category, add subtitles or ribbons, and more.
    • On the Input fields tab, you can customize text prompting customers to enter the recipient name and email address, sender name, and personal message when buying gift cards. You can also mark fields as required and change the order.

      The email address field is required, as recipients get their gift cards delivered via email. This setting cannot be changed.

    • On the SEO tab, you can change the gift card page title and meta description and set a custom URL for the gift card product in your online store.
    • On the "Buy Now" Button tab, you can copy the embed code to sell gift cards on other external websites, in addition to the website included with your eCom account.
  5. Save the changes.

You can also display the gift card icon in your store’s bottom navigation menu so that customers can access it at any time:

  1. Navigate to Catalog > Gift Cards in your eCom Admin.
  2. Toggle on Show gift card icon in bottom navigation menu.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

  • You can only have one gift card product in a store, but you can set different gift card amounts for customers to choose from.

  • The gift card redemption field appears at checkout once you sell at least one gift card in your store. Then customers will see the Have a gift card? Redeem your code message in the cart that shows the card redemption field. You can also show the gift card field as expanded using CSS code.

  • A customer can use a gift card in multiple orders until the entire balance is spent or the card expires, whichever happens first.

  • No, you can apply only one gift card to an order.

  • No, a gift card can be used to pay for any product or service offered in your store.

  • Gift cards cannot be uploaded to Facebook or Instagram due to Facebook’s Terms of Use.

  • If the user has permissions to access the page, gift card codes are visible in Customers > Gift cards in Retail POS. Gift card recipients see the full code when they get an email after purchasing a gift card.
