Setting up your DYMO 550 or DYMO 550 Turbo label printer

The DYMO 550 and DYMO 550 Turbo let you print product labels through either a USB or LAN connection. You'll need to install the latest DYMO software in order to print. Once that's done, set up and test your DYMO printer.

What you need

Before setting up your DYMO 550 or DYMO 550 Turbo with your Windows PC or Mac, make sure you have the following:

Hardware

DYMO 550 or DYMO 550 Turbo label printer DYMO 550 Turbo label printer.
Power cable DYMO 550 Turbo label printer power cables.

You'll also need one of these two cables, depending on how you want to connect your printer to Retail POS:

Ethernet cable (for connection by LAN) Ethernet cable.
USB cable (for connection by USB) DYMO printer back with the USB cable plugged in.

Supported labels

The DYMO 550 and DYMO 550 Turbo are only compatible with DYMO-manufactured labels. The label printer uses Automatic Label Recognition to display the label size, type, and number of labels remaining. The printer only functions if the correct labels are installed.

Retail POS supports these DYMO label sizes:

  • 11352 (1" x 2-1/8")
  • 30336 (1" x 2-1/8")
  • 30373 (jewelry/rat-tail)

Downloading the latest DYMO software

The DYMO 550 and DYMO 550 Turbo require devices running macOS 10.15 and higher / Windows OS 8.1 or higher.

Before you set up your DYMO printer, you'll need to make sure you're using the latest version of DYMO Connect.

  1. Go to the DYMO downloads page.
  2. Choose The Latest Software & Drivers for all LabelWriters and LabelManager dropdown.

  3. Click the Download button under your device.
  4. Open the downloaded file and follow the steps in the DYMO Setup Wizard to install the software.

Apple users may be prompted to authorize installation of the DYMO Connect software. If this happens, the terminal window will automatically open. Enter the password you use to log into your device, then press return.

Connecting your printer via Ethernet (LAN) cable

Connecting with your printer via LAN allows you to link to your printer via your local network, so your device doesn't need to be plugged into the printer directly with a USB cable in order to print with it. You can find more on connecting to your printer via your network in DYMO's support documentation

  1. Plug the Ethernet cable (not provided) into your DYMO label printer's Ethernet port.

  2. Plug the other end into one of your router's Ethernet ports.
  3. Open DYMO Connect from a computer connected to the same network.
  4. Select File > Add network printer from the menu.
  5. Follow the prompts to connect your printer.

Connecting your printer via USB

Once the software has been installed, connect your DYMO label printer directly to your computer via the USB cable provided and the power cord to a power supply.

Setting the label printing format in Retail POS

Once you've connected your printer, you'll need to make sure Retail POS is set up correctly. The DYMO 550 and DYMO 550 Turbo are continuous printing format printers. To get your labels to print correctly, set your label printer format in Retail POS.

  1. Load your labels into your printer. Check the provided manual or DYMO's support documentation for full instructions.
  2. In Retail POS, navigate to Setup > General.
  3. From the Label printer format dropdown, select Continuous feed. Label printer format dropdown menu with Continuous feed selected.
  4. Click Save changes.

Printing test labels

To ensure the setup has been done correctly, test print a few labels.

  1. Navigate to Catalog > Products.
  2. Choose a product and click to expand it.
  3. Click Print labels...

  4. Input the quantity of labels to print. A run of 5 or more labels can show if the alignment is correct. Choose label quantity tab.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Confirm the settings are correct and click Print.
  7. In the Chrome Print Preview screen, click More settings.
  8. Select the Paper Size dropdown.
  9. Select your label size code (or nearest label size code) and click Print.
