In Retail POS, you can manually upload images while creating new products individually. For existing products, you can use the import function to upload images in bulk.
Formatting your image upload file
You can either download the template and enter your product information or download and modify a copy of your inventory file.
To download and prepare your inventory file:
- Navigate to Catalog > Products.
- (Optional) Filter your list to include only the products you want to update.
- Click Export list.
-
Select your preferred file format from the dropdown. Your file will automatically download.
- Open the file in Google Sheets or Excel.
- In the spreadsheet, delete the rows for any products you don't need to update.
-
Delete all columns except for id, handle, sku, and name.
- Rename the id column to
product_id. -
Add a new column and name it
image_url. If adding multiple images, continue to add columnsimage_url_2,image_url_3, etc. You can add up to five images at a time in this way.If your product has variants, you can add 1 variant image in this way by creating a
variant_imagecolumn. The image you link to will automatically apply to the parent variant of your listed product. You can add more variant images manually by editing the product.
Values in the product_id, sku, and handle columns must be an exact match to the values in Retail POS. If you modify these fields, your images may fail to import correctly.
Preparing image URLs
To upload images to Retail POS, you need to use an external image hosting service and provide the direct URLs to your images. These URLs must link directly to an image, not a folder or wider website. Once you've uploaded the images, they are saved on Lightspeed servers and the original URLs are no longer needed.
- Format your images to .JPEG, .JPG, or .WEBP file types at a maximum size of 10 MB.
- Upload your image files to an external image hosting service like Dropbox. Google Drive is not recommended due to limited fetch requests.
-
In Dropbox or similar, copy the direct URLs to the uploaded images and paste them into the image columns in your spreadsheet. Add only one link per cell.
The process for copying direct image URLs varies by image hosting service, but generally you can click on the image > Share > update the view permissions if needed > Copy link. Test the link in an Incognito window to verify it links directly to the image.
- If you're using Dropbox, find and replace any instances of
dl=0withraw=1in your image links.
The product_id values will be matched to products in Retail POS. If no match is found, the sku and handle values will be used instead. Do not modify these values, or images may fail to import correctly.
Importing your image spreadsheet file
- Navigate to Products.
-
Click Import.
-
Drag and drop your file or click Select a file to upload... and choose your file.
-
Click the Additional details tab.
-
In the Product images section, use the Spreadsheet column dropdowns to map each column.
As you map each spreadsheet column, the Import status column will change from Unmapped to Mapped.
- When finished, click Import matched fields.
- If a warning appears, click Continue anyway.
You'll be automatically redirected to the Products page, and your product images will upload. When uploading is finished, you'll see a dot on your notification header icon.
You can click the notification header icon to confirm a successful upload.
If you see a notification stating that some images couldn't be uploaded, click View skipped images (CSV). A .CSV file will automatically download. Open the file in a spreadsheet program and fix the issues noted within, then reupload your edited file.
