Steps

1. Navigate to Catalog -> Products
2. Filter the standard product you want to change to a product with variants
3. Click Export List
4. Choose the file format you want to export your Products as
5. Open the exported file
6. Add the new products with the same Name. Make sure you complete the variant options in the file
7. Save the file
8. Navigate back to Catalog -> Products
9. Click Import
10. Import the file
