Security tip of the month

Tip

Don’t let tax season become "scam season"

As you gear up for tax deadlines, remember: fraudsters are working overtime too. While you’re gathering documents, fraudsters are crafting schemes to steal your identity and hard-earned money.

Spot the red flags

  • Trust your instincts, not the sender: AI-generated scams can look highly convincing. If a tax notice creates urgency or panic, pause before you act.
  • Verify the source: Don’t reply, click, or engage with suspicious messages. Log in directly through the official portal (e.g., CRA or IRS) or call a verified number from the official website, not the one in the message.
  • Know how governments communicate: Government agencies will not ask for sensitive personal information via email, text, or phone, nor will they threaten arrest. If you receive a request like that, do not respond or click any links.
  • Be cautious of caller ID: Phone numbers can be faked to appear legitimate. Don’t rely on call display alone to verify authenticity.
  • Lock down your identity: Use strong, unique passwords and enable MFA wherever possible.
